What Teens Need to Prevent Teen Pregnancy
Every year, young people are inundated with a barrage of messages about sex and sexuality from their peers and through the media. How do we ensure that adolescents are getting the right messages that will help them stay safe and healthy and avoid early parenthood? The Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy believes that that young people can make positive decisions about their sexual health and prevent too-early childbearing if they have access to quality, research-based programs that provide:
- Hope for a bright future and perception of opportunity
- Access to information from accurate, nonjudgmental sources
- Guidance from caring adults who respect their rights and capabilities
- Support for their healthy choices, including abstinence and condom and contraceptive use
- Access to condoms and other contraceptives
Unfortunately, with fewer and fewer state and federal resource allocations to teen pregnancy prevention programs, many teens at-risk of early childbearing do not have access to effective programs that give age-appropriate information about sexuality and methods of preventing teen pregnancy and STI/HIV transmission. The Alliance works to prevent teen pregnancy and decrease adolescent birthrates in the state by
1. advocating for a greater investment in state funding for teen pregnancy prevention programs
2. increasing the capacity of youth-serving professionals to reduce teen pregnancy in their communities by providing information, technical assistance and training.
Through this website, the Alliance strives to connect youth-serving professionals, educators, health care workers and others on the front line with resources that will enhance their important work.
